Founded in 2001, the William E. Macaulay Honors College (MHC) is the City University of New York's landmark program for students of exceptional ability. CUNY's seven participating campuses admit incoming freshman to the Macaulay Honors College. These students, called University Scholars, are granted scholarships covering their full tuition in the fall and spring semesters for four years, given laptop computers, and awarded access to funds for study abroad programs and internships. Furthermore, University Scholars are provided with dedicated facilities such as lounges and computer labs at their home campuses, and are supported by a close community of peers, mentoring professors, and advisors. The success of the Macaulay Honors College and its students has drawn much attention recently, including press coverage in The New York Times and The Economist. The MHC's accomplishments have also garnered the attention of CUNY's distinguished alumni, leading to City College alumnus William E. Macaulay's unprecedented generosity in awarding the MHC $30 Million. Mr. Macaulay's gift will be used for the purchase of a new home for Honors College, in a beautiful Gothic revival building at 35 West 67th Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. CUNY Board of Trustees Chair Benno C. Schmidt Jr. has remarked that, "This pioneering gift sends a signal of support all across America that CUNY is the place for the best and brightest."

Curriculum

As a University Scholar at the Macaulay Honors College, you choose a major program of study at your home campus, but your educational experience draws on the academic resources of the entire City University of New York and extends to embrace New York City itself. During your freshman and sophomore years, you will complete a series of four honors seminars that focus on different aspects of New York City. Your Cultural Passport gains you admission to many of New York's world-class cultural institutions. Once you have selected a major, you will have the opportunity to study with CUNY's outstanding faculty in your field. As the country's largest urban public university, CUNY has the resources to nurture scholars in numerous disciplines.
