- The School of Social Work, regularly ranked among the top 15 in this field by U.S. News and World Report, is the only publicly sponsored graduate social work program in the City. It has produced more than 6,000 professionals, most of whom move into the public and voluntary sectors. The School's students yearly provide more than 485,000 uncompensated hours of service in the City.
- The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing and the School of Health Sciences graduate a highly-trained cadre of health practitioners each year who move into positions in local hospitals, laboratories, public health agencies, non-profit organizations and other health facilities.
- The Center on AIDS, Drugs and Community Health has trained more than 5,000 professionals and has assisted more than 75 local organizations and agencies. The Center has generated more than $17 million in grants, contracts, and contributions.
- The College's Leona and Marcy Chanin Language Center, a state-of-the-art laboratory for learning foreign languages, will open in late 1998. Made possible by a $1 million gift from the Chanins and a $383,000 NEH grant, it will generate construc-tion jobs and increase income for local merchants and suppliers.
- The Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse hosts performances throughout the year, adding more than $1 million to the local economy; all of its nearly 50 employees live in the City.
- The Community Interpreter Project trains bilingual students for medical interpretation; for six years these students have provided nearly 15,000 hours of volunteer service in 14 City child health centers, three federal maternity/infant care clinics, and six local hospitals.

Fifty-three percent of CUNY students are first-generation college goers and 28 percent are the first in their immediate family to attend college.
