York College

  • Ground was recently broken on the York campus for a new U.S. Food and Drug Administration laboratory and office building. The 260,000-square foot regional headquarters is budgeted at $85 million and will be the largest FDA site outside Washington, providing 430 permanent jobs, as well as 400 construction jobs. The FDA presence will enhance the College's already strong biotechnical and health science programs and lead to a variety of collaborations with the College.

  • The College's Small Business Development Center, now in its 10th year, specializes in minority and women-owned businesses and offers assistance in loan packaging and a variety of workshops and seminars. The SBDC has two satellite offices, in Far Rockaway and Jackson Heights, and has secured $13.5 million in financing for more than 750 clients.

  • Among York's 75 grants from private and government agencies last year was a $1.35 million federal grant for Minority Biomedical Research Support to increase the numbers of minority scientists. In an NIH-funded Minority Access to Research Centers program, outstanding students on a doctoral career path work closely with York faculty and take special honors courses.

  • A three-year NASA grant of $500,000 funds MASTAP (Mathematics, Science, and Technology Awards Program) to revitalize science teaching in junior and high schools and improve teaching skills and train mentors for pre-service teachers.

  • The York College Learning Center, funded by $1.5 million in government and private grants, offers comprehensive educational and job-training services to more than 2,000 community residents. The center focuses particularly on youth, single parents, the unemployed, recipients of public assistance, and former substance abusers in treatment.
