President Tomás D. Morales

Dr. Tomás D. Morales was appointed by the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York to serve as the third President of the College of Staten Island in June of 2007. He holds a BA in Secondary Education (History), cum laude, from The State University of New York (SUNY) New Paltz, and earned his MS and PhD in Educational Administration and Policy Studies from SUNY, Albany.

Having served as an educator and administrative leader in higher education for over 30 years, he is one of the few higher education administrators in the United States who have held senior administrative positions at the three largest public university systems in the nation: the California State University system, The State University of New York (SUNY), and The City University of New York (CUNY).

At California State Polytechnic University from 2001-2007, Dr. Morales served as the Provost and Vice President for Academic affairs, the chief academic officer and principal deputy to the President, with responsibility for providing academic vision and leadership for seven colleges, one professional school and the university library.

From 1994-2001, Dr. Morales was Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at The City College of New York/CUNY. There he provided strategic leadership, restructured the Student Services Corporation, instituted an accounting and internal audit system, and reorganized and implemented a student-centered management and advocacy model for the Division of Student Affairs. He also initiated an annual student training and leadership conference, and developed a new process for the evaluation of personnel and assessment of programs and services.

Before joining The City College, he was Assistant Dean of the School of Education at SUNY New Paltz from 1991 to 1994. His association with SUNY began in 1975, when he served as a Counselor in the Educational Opportunity Program at New Paltz. From 1977-79 he was Assistant Director of State Programs at Cornell University, returning to SUNY as the Associate Director of the Advancement on Individual Merit (AIM) Program at Stony Brook from 1979-81. He served as Director of the Office of the Special Admissions and Educational Opportunity Program at SUNY, New Paltz from 1981-94, and was named Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs in 1987.
