Lehman
College was established as a senior college of the City University
in 1968. A comprehensive college of the liberal arts and sciences,
Lehman offers more than 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs
and specializations. In association with the New York Botanical Garden,
the City University's doctoral program in Plant Sciences is housed
at Lehman. Professional programs in education and health are strengthened
by the College's close collaboration with Bronx schools and hospitals.
Lehman is also in the vanguard of an exciting new field of art
and technology, with student internship projects in global communications
and design. The Lehman College Art Gallery's on-line magazine for
critical discourse, TalkBack!, has been widely reviewed in the art
world and mainstream press. The New York Times has called Lehman's
37-acre tree-lined campus "the most attractive of the CUNY
campuses...with some of its finest facilities." The campus
is home to Lehman Center for the Performing Arts and The APEX, a
world-class facility for sports, recreation, and fitness.
With the cable company BronxNet broadcasting from the campus, Lehman
has also expanded its mass communications offerings. The College
has developed a multilingual journalism program, supported by a
full offering of foreign languages and internships. An international
emphasis in its curriculum reflects the global career interests
of Lehman's nearly 10,000 students, who come from more than 80 countries.
The campus was named for Herbert H. Lehman, the former New York
State Governor, United States Senator, philanthropist, and humanitarian.
