Who is eligible for ASAP?
ASAP is available for a selected group of students who are willing and able to commit to a full-time schedule of college courses (12 credits or more a semester) starting in September 2007, and to participate in a comprehensive summer program this summer.
ASAP is available exclusively to New York City residents. Applicants must demonstrate that they have lived in one of the five NYC boroughs for a period of six consecutive months prior to the first day of classes. They must also state their intention to maintain their principal place of residence in New York City permanently.
Students who meet the CUNY standards for competence in Reading, Writing and Mathematics by fall 2007 may be selected for ASAP. This means that:
- If you have taken the SAT and scored above 480 on either the Math or the Critical Reading (or Verbal, if you took the SAT prior to 2006) sections, you may be eligible for ASAP; or
- If you received a score of 75 or more on the NYS Regents examinations in English or Math, you may be eligible for ASAP.
For the one area (either Reading or Math) for which you do not have the needed SAT or Regents score, take the CUNY Skills Assessment Test as soon as you can. If you get a passing score you will be eligible for ASAP.
Even if you do not get a passing score, you may still qualify for ASAP. You can participate in the ASAP summer program and take a developmental course over the summer in that subject area. At the end of the summer program, if you take the CUNY Skills Assessment Test again and get a passing score, you can enroll in ASAP in September.
The program will enroll 1000 students across the six community colleges. Because enrollment is limited it is important to submit your CUNY application as soon as possible and take the CUNY Skills Assessment Test as soon as you are notified of your testing date.
Do not rely on this description to decide if you are eligible! Call the number for the community college of your choice and speak to a counselor who will discuss your individual situation and qualifications with you.
