The Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost's Distinguished Lecture Series features outstanding scholars and researchers from around the world, discussing their work in lectures designed to address both specialists in their fields as well as the general University community. Past Distinguished Lecturers have included: Clifford Adelman, author of The Toolbox Revisted; John Monahan, John S. Shannon Distinguished Professor in Law at the University of Virginia and author of The Clinical Prediction of Violent Behavior; and Alex Pate, author of In the Heart of the Beat: The Poetry of Rap and commentator for National Public Radio's All Things Considered.

Current discussions of American literature as multilingual and transnational offer fruitful new models for understanding Jewish American literature. This lecture will examine a Yiddish story written in New York in the 1930's as a case study for reframing Jewish American literature as both ethnic and transnational. The story "Newyorkish" by Lamed Shapiro serves as a site for exploring both the response of Jewish immigrants to the racial and ethnic dimensions of American life, and the linguistic, textual, and cultural aspects of Jewish civilization that have been continuous and that cross national boundaries.
