Ask CUNY:

CUNY is as diverse as New York City itself. Selective programs such as Macaulay Honors College, The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, and The Teacher Academy, nationally ranked baccalaureate campuses, award winning community colleges, and highly prized professional schools offer every imaginable program from engineering to Puerto Rican studies, from anthropology to hospitality management. Internships, international study, and research experiences extend learning beyond the classroom.

Whatever you're looking for
a Bachelor or an Associate degree,
a grassy, green campus or a college in the heart of the city,
courses in art history, biology, music, or computer science —
CUNY has a place for you.

At CUNY, we are fully committed to your success, and we want you to take full advantage of the opportunities available at our University. So we recommend that you come to college well-prepared. The best way to prepare for college and assure achievement is to complete a rigorous high school curriculum. Take challenging courses in mathematics, the social and natural sciences, and the humanities. Enroll in Advanced Placement and honors courses and in college credit courses, including those offered through CUNY’s College Now program if you attend a New York City public high school.

If you are enrolled in a New York State high school that offers the Regents Diploma, take as many Regents courses and examinations as possible. Aspire to a Regents Diploma. Better yet, get an Advanced Regents Diploma or a Regents Diploma with Honors.

Grades are important. Good grades require hard work and hard work in high school is the best preparation for success in college.

We recommend the following high school course work as solid preparation for success in college:

  • Four years of English
  • Four years of history or social studies
  • Four years of mathematics
  • Three years of science
  • Three to four years of foreign language
  • One or two years of performing or visual arts

We recommend, also, that you take the PSAT or PLAN in your sophomore year and prepare for either the SAT or ACT before completion of high school.

If you have not had the opportunity to complete a full, challenging program of study at high school and are enrolled in a General Education Diploma (GED) preparatory program or have recently received the GED, we also welcome you to CUNY and will provide you many opportunities to succeed. You can take specially tailored courses in reading, writing, English as a second language, and mathematics and can use our tutoring and counseling services. Visit the college web sites to see how CUNY can help you begin your college career.

At CUNY, you can select one of three applications: General Freshman Admission, Macaulay Honors College, or The Teacher Academy.

On the General Freshman Admission application, you can apply to the 17 undergraduate colleges of CUNY, both four-year and community colleges. After exploring the opportunities offered at each college, you may select as many as six colleges on your application and receive an admission decision from each.

Priority Deadline: March 15 for Fall; October 1 for Spring
Applications received after the priority deadline will be considered for admission based on space availability. Since high-demand programs and colleges may fill their admission seats early, however, you should apply as soon as have decided upon the colleges you wish to attend.
