Transfer Applicants

Transfer applicants are students who have previously attended any college, university, and/or proprietary school since graduating from high school, whether or not they are seeking transfer credit and whether or not they are changing their major program of study. Students who wish to transfer from one CUNY institution to another are advised to visit the Transfer Information & Program Planning System (TIPPS).

Preparing for Transfer Admission

Students without an associate's degree will be considered for transfer admission to a CUNY college based on the number of credits completed, their cumulative GPA, and competency in English and Mathematics.

Criteria for Admission

Admission to a CUNY college as a transfer student is based upon the student's high school and college academic record, according to criteria established by the individual colleges.

Applying

  • You may apply online and choose up to four programs and colleges and be admitted to one. Indicate your college choice in order of preference. There is a non-refundable $70 application fee. (Only current CUNY student may be exempted from this fee.)
  • To apply online, you need to register on the CUNY Portal. Get started now!
  • Required educational documents
  • Transcripts
    • College or University
      • Arrange to have transcripts from all colleges, universities, and/or proprietary schools that you have attended sent directly from the institution issuing them to UAPC, whether or not you are seeking transfer credit. If you are currently attending college, we will require a transcript indicating your courses in progress.

For students who are currently attending or who have attended a CUNY college, UAPC will automatically request all CUNY transcripts. Applicants will be notified by UAPC if we are unable to obtain the transcripts.
      • Applicants Educated Outside the United States: If you have attended college or university outside the United States, request that official transcripts from all postsecondary schools attended be sent directly from the institution issuing them to UAPC. Students from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan must request official university-issued mark sheets from the Controller of Examinations. The official transcript must come in the language in which it is normally issued in a university stationery envelope with proper signatures. Please note that any non-university stamp (notary, translation, etc.) on the transcript makes the document unofficial and it cannot be accepted as official.
    • High School/Secondary School
      • An official copy of your high school transcript is required.
      • GED Recipients: If you have received your General Education Development (GED) diploma from New York State, mail a photocopy of the original diploma along with your GED test scores to UAPC. If you do not have a copy, you may obtain one from the New York State Education Department High School Equivalency Testing Program, PO Box 7348, Albany, New York, 12224-0348. If you have received your GED diploma in a state outside of New York, contact the appropriate State Education Department.
      • Home-Schooled Applicants: New York State residents who are home-schooled must submit a transcript outlining all completed course work with grades earned. Students must also submit a letter from the superintendent of their school district confirming that all high school graduation requirements of the district have been met through home-schooling. If students cannot obtain the letter from the high school district, they must obtain a GED and send an official copy of the results and diploma to UAPC. Out-of-state residents who are home-schooled must submit a state-issued diploma to UAPC.
      • Applicants Educated Outside the United States: If you have attended high school/secondary school outside the United States, provide photocopies of secondary school transcripts, mark sheets, or secondary external examination certificates (CXC, GCE, WASC, EASC, etc.).
  • Translation of Documents
Documents written in languages other than English must be accompanied by an official translation. In addition, you should request from the postsecondary school that a copy of the transcript be sent to you, so that you can obtain a translation. Take this copy to an authorized translator (a university official, an official of the consulate or embassy, a translation service, or a faculty member of a U.S. high school or university.) You must obtain a word-for-word translation of the entire document on business letterhead. You will mail this translation along with a copy of the transcript to UAPC.
  • Test Scores
TOEFL scores are required of applicants on temporary visas whose native language is not English. To have TOEFL scores sent to CUNY, use the CUNY institutional code 2950 and mail a copy of your student score report to UAPC. You do not need to use both the CUNY institutional code and a specific college code.
  • All documents should be sent to:
The City University of New York
    University Application Processing Center (UAPC)
    P.O. Box 359023
    Brooklyn, NY 11235-9023
  • Priority Deadline: March 15 for Fall; October 1 for Spring.
Applications received after the priority deadline will be considered for admission based on space availability.
  • You can obtain the status of your admission application by contacting the Office of Admission Services at aonline@mail.cuny.edu or 212-997-CUNY(2869). Please provide your full name, social security number or CUNY application identification number, date of birth, and the semester for which you are applying.

The Teacher Academy welcomes transfer applications. If you are planning to transfer to one of The Teacher Academy campuses from another college, including CUNY schools, you should first submit a CUNY Transfer Application and The Teacher Academy Supplementary Transfer Application that includes two essay questions. You are also asked to submit two recommendation letters, including at least one from a college math or science teacher, an official transcript from your Fall semester, a high school transcript, and SAT or ACT scores.

If you are presently a CUNY student and want to apply to The Teacher Academy at your campus, please complete The Teacher Academy Supplementary Transfer Application available in the admission office at your college. In addition, submit two letters of recommendation.

The Teacher Academy is a selective program. Transfer applicants to The Teacher Academy should ideally have a cumulative college grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Students admitted to The Teacher Academy will spend three years in the program and are required to attend The Teacher Academy summer program proceeding the sophomore year. Transfer students complete a minimum of 90 credits in The Teacher Academy. Final acceptance will be contingent on the submission of a satisfactory college transcript including current semester grades.

Deadline: April 1 for priority review; applications received after April 1 will be considered for transfer to The Teacher Academy as space permits.

Students who have earned a CUNY associate degree (AA, AS, or AAS) are guaranteed admission to one of the CUNY senior colleges, although not necessarily to the program or college of their first choice. If you transfer to CUNY with an AA or AS degree, you are guaranteed at least 60 credits toward a 120-credit bachelor's degree.

SEEK students who wish to transfer within CUNY should file a Special Programs Transfer Request Form through their current SEEK program. Contact your program director for details. College Discovery students should contact the director of College Discovery at their college for information about transfer requirements. EOP and HEOP students may be eligible for admission to SEEK and College Discovery. For more information contact the SEEK/CD department at the campus of your choice.

The CUNY Baccalaureate degree (also known as CUNY BA) is a selective, University-wide, individualized degree program for students whose academic and professional goals transcend the limitations of a traditional college major. Faculty mentors guide highly-motivated, self-directed students in their creation of individualized concentrations that take advantage of courses offered throughout the CUNY system.

To apply for admission, you must be matriculated at a CUNY college (your “home” college), although you can apply to a CUNY college at the same time as applying to CUNY BA. Minimum eligibility includes at least 15 transfer credits with at least a 2.5 GPA (the average GPA upon entry is typically 3.2), a strong letter of recommendation from a faculty member, a personal statement, and a proposal of courses for a concentration that does not replicate a college major already offered. The recommended filing dates for each term are: May 1 for entering the Program in the Fall semester, and November 1 for entering in the Spring semester. Applications submitted after these deadlines are considered as time and space permit. For details visit www.cunyba.cuny.edu or call 212-817-8220.
