Richard Alvarez

University Director of Admission

Richard P. Alvarez is the University Director of Admission for The City University of New York (CUNY). Prior to this appointment, he served as a member of the enrollment management team at Pace University for 14 years. He began his admission career at Montclair State College (now University) in 1985 as an Admission Counselor.

During Richard's tenure in admission, he has been involved in creating and maintaining access to higher education to the diverse population of New York City. He has also been involved in a wide range of professional activities to provide leadership and expand professional development opportunities to college admission and high school counselors helping students with the transition into higher education at the local, state, national and international levels. Richard is currently serving a three-year term as a Director on the National Association for College Admission Counseling's Board of Directors (NACAC). He is a Past President of the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling (NYSACAC) and has been an active member since 1988. In addition, he has been a member of several College Board committees including the Middle States Region SAT Advisory Committee, the NY State Advisory Committee, and the New York GEAR UP Admissions Action Panel. He also chairs the three CUNY Admission Advisory Boards. Richard is a founding member of the Latino College Expo, an organization created to meet the special needs of the Latino college-bound population of NYC. As a result, Richard is a frequent speaker on the transition to higher education.

Richard earned a B.A. in Communication from Hunter College of CUNY, and an M.S. Ed. in Higher Education Administration at CUNY's Baruch College.
