CUNYNet Update

CUNYNet continues to grow and is close to completing its goal of giving all of the campuses T-1 (1.544 MB) capability, with upgraded multiplexing equipment, and faster and more flexible routing (for a smaller yearly cost).

TCP/IP connectivity, providing direct access to the Internet, is also expanding. Kingsborough Community College has been added and work is in progress to connect Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, Hostos Community College, New York Technical College, LaGuardia Community College and Queensborough Community College. Soon all colleges will enjoy access to the Internet through CUNYNet.

This is happening by utilizing NYNEX's Networking Configuration System, which routes traffic from one site through telephone company hubs to another site (in this case from one CUNY college to another, or to CUNY/CIS at 57th Street).

Plans for utilizing CUNYNet to carry voice and video from campus to campus have begun with a prototype set using the T-1 line between the Central Office at East 80th Street and CUNY/CIS at 57th Street. The T-1 is currently configured to carry four remote terminal controllers for data (at 19.2 kb each), a PBX for voice (24 voice channels at 32 kb each), and a video-conferencing component (at 576 kb bandwidth).
