The CUNY Network has experienced some changes and additions over the past summer. Bronx Community, LaGuardia Community, and Hostos Community Colleges were added to the TCP/IP router network, giving them access to the Internet. Router bandwidth was increased for some campuses, to support growth in number of users and increased access to the WWW. Medgar Evers College is being added to the router network this fall, completing Internet access for all CUNY colleges.
The major enhancement for CUNYNet was increasing bandwidth from CUNY out to the Internet by converting from T1 (1.544MBps) to T3 (45MBps) and changing our Internet provider from ANS to NYSERNet/Sprint. This change was necessitated by virtue of the increased demand for Internet access from the compuses. We will continue to monitor and enhance CUNYNet to meet the growing use of Internet tools and facilities by the CUNY Community.
Like many other universities, CUNY is investigating SLIP/PPP dialup access to the Internet. As reported in the last issue of FYeI, we are still talking to vendors who would either partner with CUNY or offer dialup access to faculty, staff, and students directly at a reasonable rate. The market for dialup access to the Internet is extremely volatile, with new and more cost effective opportunities presenting themselves daily. We will keep you posted on developments in this area.
