A Talk with CUNYCard Designer Sal Acosta

How did you get where you are today?

"I came to this country from Puerto Rico when I was about six years old. Since my childhood I've always had a strong desire for drawing and painting. When I reached my high school years I was almost certain that being in the designing field was what I wanted. When I reached college things started to change. I started learning the art of photography and the darkroom techniques. I also got my hands on the computer. I thought I would never learn it. I was not that fast with it but before I knew it I was actually creating nice things. I learned a lot from the computer about how to apply my artistic mind. I continued what I was doing in high school only now it was performed on the computer."

Aside from classes, how did you develop your skills?

"I participated in many art contests and always tried to be unique in my work. I created paintings on my walls at home, especially in my room. Friends wanted me to paint scenes and characters on their walls. I also designed invitations for parties and group activities. Right now I am working with my friend Kashim Valez, a rap performer, on his album cover. It's almost done and I hope he likes it!"

Can we talk a little about how it was to work on the CUNYCard design

"It was really fun. We had to change the image of the Statue of Liberty, because of copyright issues, and I had to change my original design some. I first worked on it as a class assignment for Professor Robert Holden, but then I worked one-on-one with my teacher, Professor Dorothy Hayes. She was very helpful to me."

What are your plans for the future now that you've graduated from New York Tech?

"I just want to get a good job and become the best designer!"

Any thoughts for upcoming CUNY students like yourself?

"I never thought I would get this far with this talent. It goes to show that if you really want something in life you can achieve it by dedication, time and giving it all you've got."
