For over a year, the Electronic Resources Advisory Committee, which represents all CUNY campus libraries, has met monthly to evaluate products and to trade practical information on implementing electronic resources.
In the fall of 1996, two Chadwick Healy products, Periodical Citations Online and Literary Lion were tested. In the spring of 1997, three web-based products that give access to general interest academic journals were made available to the entire CUNY community for evaluation. They were: IAC's Expanded Academic Index/ASAP, EBSOCHost's Academic Search Full TEXT 1000 and UMIProquest Direct. During the fall, OCLC's First Search full text databases were made available for similar tests to evaluate their content, scope, interface usability, indexing, and response time.
While no decision has yet been made on licensing a general periodical product, the libraries were able to implement several other products this year. Britannica Online is available at all CUNY campuses. IAC's Health Reference Center Gold, a general interest consumer health database with full text, is available throughout CUNY as part of a joint project with the New York Public Library. Project MUSE, a web product that offers electronic access to all journals published by Johns Hopkins University has been licensed by seven campuses through a consortium arrangement with the SUNY/OCLC network. Eight CUNY campuses with graduate math programs have licensed MathSciNet at considerable discount.
Point your browser to the Library Services Home Page at: http://libraries.cuny.edu/ and click on the Licensed Resources button to discover products licensed to the entire University. For programs licensed locally, consult your local campus home page or your campus librarian (See People You Should Know on Campus).
