CUNYNet

The year 1992-1993 was one of growth for CUNYNet. Since the Fall semester of 1992, five additional colleges have been connected to the Internet via the central gateway at the University Computer Center. Access to the Internet continues from CUNYVM also.

Much infrastructure work has also been accomplished. NYNEX's Network Reconfiguration Services (NRS) are being employed to provide greater speed and redundancy to the leased lines that carry data from the campuses to and from the central processor. Approximately half the campuses have already been connected to CUNYNet via NRS.

When the project is completed, all colleges will have T-1 (1.544 MB) capability, with upgraded multi-plexing equipment, and faster and more flexible routing (for a smaller yearly cost). The target date for completion of this aspect of the net-work upgrade is Spring 1994.

Victor Viggiano, Director of Commu-nications at CUNY, is enthusiastic about the changes that have taken place and the direction we are moving in as a University. "When fully implemented, CUNYNet will allow transfer of much more than data. We expect to be able to carry voice and video from campus to campus."
