University Software Project

The University's Central Office regularly negotiates agreements with vendors for cost effective solutions to academic and administrative needs. Presently, a University Software Initiative is succeeding in negotiating volume discounts on widely used software packages and, where possible, site licensing software products widely used in our academic and administrative arenas.

A software site license is the way the University obtains intellectual property - the codes and development efforts that make up a software product - for use in the University's classrooms and offices at substantially reduced pricing from the purchase of individual software packages. Normally a site license allows the copying of software for faculty and staff use and for student use in the classroom. Each company allowing site licensing has intricate sets of rules and regulations on how the product may be distributed and the University is legally bound to report the number of copies of software that are made and where they are being used.

Every college at the University has a Site License Coordinator who is responsible for distributing and tracking software the University has licensed. (See "People You Should Know on Campus," pages 14 & 15.) The University also supports a University Software Support Center that maintains and distributes master disks of the products and provides reports to the software companies on its use.

The University has site licensed all Borland Software, True Basic Mathematics Software, SPSS and SAS statistical software, Macromedia Authoring Software, the DEC Educational Software Library and the Sun Scholar Pak. The University has negotiated a very attractive agreement with the Lotus Development Corporation for reduced pricing on all of their software, and recently negotiated a similar agreement with WordPerfect.

The University also encourages the development of discipline-based courseware. Over 35 classroom-based packages have already been developed by CUNY faculty. Many of these courseware packages are receiving national attention and are already in wide use at the University and around the country.

To obtain any of the software packages listed on this page, contact the Site License Coordinator at your campus. The University will continue to seek out advantageous site licensing and reduced pricing opportunities that will make additional software available at campus sites.

The following PC products are available from the Site License Coordinator at each college. Note that the license agreement varies from product to product, in some cases allowing full distribution within the university, and in others very limited distribution or at a deep discount. For further details, contact the Site License Coordinator on your campus.
