Dr. Sheldon Weinbaum, CUNY Distinguished
Professor of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at City College and
the Graduate Center was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, at
the 139th annual meeting of the Academy. Election to membership in the
Academy is one of the highest honors that can be accorded a United States
scientist.
We are enormously proud of his achievements and 34 years of dedication
to CUNY students, said CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein.
Professor Weinbaum is one of six active CUNY faculty members who have
been elected to the Academy. In addition to Professor Weinbaum, CUNY members
of the National Academy of Sciences include: Distinguished Professor of
Physics at City College and the Graduate Center Herman Z. Cummins; Distinguished
Professor of Physics at City College and the Graduate Center Melvin Lax;
Distinguished Professor of Physics at City College and the Graduate Center
Myriam P. Sarachik; Albert Einstein Professor Emeritus of Science and
Engineering at City College Andreas Acrivos, and Distinguished Professor
of Mathematics and Albert Einstein Professor Science at the Graduate Center
and Queens College Dennis Sullivan.
Professor Weinbaum is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering,
along with Prof. Acrivos and Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering
at City College Reuel Shinnar.
Dr. Weinbaum is one of just 72 U.S. scientists elected to membership in
the National Academy of Sciences this year. He was also named a winner
in this years John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundations Fellowship
competition, one of three 2002 Fellows selected in the field of molecular
and cellular biology. His research focus will be to study further the
endothelial glycocalyx, a fiber matrix or gel-like structure that coats
the surface of the inner lining of blood vessels.
He was the founding director of the New York Center for Biomedical Engineering
located at City College, a consortium of CCNYs School fo Engineering,
the CUNY Medical School, the CUNY Graduate Center, CCNYs Science
Division and faculty from seven of the premier health care institutions
in New York City. These include Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Columbia
College of Physicians and Surgeons, The Hospital for Special Surgery,
Mount Sinai School of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine, Sloan Kettering
Institute and Weill-Cornell Medical College.
