Two CUNY Teams Win PowerBridgeNY Awards

June 10, 2014 | Uncategorized

Teams lead by CUNY professors Dr. Alan Lyons and Dr. Yannis Andreopolis are winners of the prestigious PowerBridgeNY Award for their projects to improve the energy output of solar panels and the efficiency of HVAC technology, respectfully.

A team led by Dr. Lyons (College of Staten Island), seeks to improve the energy output of solar panels. Currently, the energy output is reduced by reflection of incident light at the air-glass interface and dust, pollen, and ice accumulation. An anti-reflective, self-cleaning film developed by Dr. Lyons and his team could improve energy harvest of these panels up to 40 percent.

The team led by Dr. Andreopolus (City College of New York) has developed a module to replace Andreopolisbatteries in HVAC sensors by harvesting electrical energy generated by fluid flow inside an HVAC duct. The group’s module provides a source of energy that outperforms existing HVAC energy harvesting technologies by reducing maintenance costs and generating more energy.

PowerBridgeNY consists of two proof-of-concept centers that are united by the mission to commercialize clean-energy projects at New York State educational institutions. Research teams were judged on the products’ potential to attract investors and technical merits. The program is funded in part by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

Awardees receive up to $150,000 in financial investments to fund prototyping and in-field testing studies. Award winners also receive support for all aspects of company formation including, mentoring, project management, competitive assessment, business plan development, securing investors, and team building.

The support from PowerBridgeNY will help both teams to produce prototypes that could be manufactured or licensed.  The CUNY Center for Advanced Technology (CUNY CAT) assisted Dr. Lyons with his spin-off company, ARL Designs, which will seeks to commercialize the film.
