The City University of New York extends its deepest sympathies to those affected by Hurricane Katrina. As we continue to receive reports of the mounting loss of life and the overwhelming devastation in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, the magnitude of this tragedy becomes apparent. The task of rescue and recovery, for both residents and their cities and towns, is daunting. We join the nation in mourning the deceased and offering our support to our southern neighbors. Many of our faculty, staff, and students have families and colleagues in the affected areas, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. University Dean Harry Franklin has been designated the CUNY-wide Relief Coordinator, and he will reach out to the campuses to determine appropriate action to assist the relief efforts. Members of the CUNY community who wish to help are encouraged to contact relief agencies. Additional information is available at www.nyc.gov.
I know that you join me in expressing our heartfelt condolences to the people in the Gulf states.
