Message Regarding City College

December 12, 2006 | News from the Chancellor

President Gregory H. Williams
The City College
The City University of New York
Convent Avenue & 138th Street
New York, NY 10031

Dear President Williams:

It has come to my attention from media reports and subsequent follow up with your office that one of City College’s facilities, a “community and student center” is named after “Guillermo Morales and Assata Shakur” and that a visible sign above the center entrance displays those names. I understand that this designation was unknown to you, having been so designated consistent with the permission of a previous CCNY college administration. I write to inform you that only The Board of Trustees of The City University of New York may designate or name College and University facilities. There is no record of any such Board action. Therefore, I ask you to take appropriate steps to dismantle this unauthorized and inappropriate signage.

Sincerely,

Matthew Goldstein
