Get Outside and Ride a Bike!

Bike New York is a nonprofit organization that provides free classes to New Yorkers in all five boroughs, teaching them how to ride a bike for the first time. Classes are taught all over the city, every weekend, from April to October. The only reason Bike New York can provide this service to thousands of new cyclists is because of volunteer instructors like you. More »

Volunteer with NYC Parks

Partnerships for Parks, a joint initiative of the City Parks Foundation and NYC Parks, is coordinating a listing of open-to-the-public, weekend volunteer projects that continue throughout the spring across the five boroughs. Volunteers are needed on Sunday, April 7, to help clean up Alley Pond Park in Queens. Projects will be led by various divisions of NYC Parks, offering a wide range of volunteer opportunities including painting, planting, and clearing debris. More »

New York’s Greek-American Astoria

Faculty profile: From the 1960s to the 1980s, Greek immigrants flowed into Astoria, transforming the business, culture, arts and cuisine of the Queens, N.Y., neighborhood. To record the experience, Queens College sociology professor Nicholas Alexiou launched the Hellenic-American Oral History Project, with a website featuring video interviews in English and Greek, as well as U.S. Census data, maps, and a historical overview.  “I want to tell these stories," says Alexiou. "By documenting the immigrant experience of Greeks, we are also writing the history of New York.”   More »

Sotomayor’s ‘Beloved World’

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor hopes that telling her own story won’t just paint a picture of her personal life, but of the experiences that can help us all to overcome what divides us. “If you speak a different language, if you have a different color skin, if you come from a background that is different from the norm — people forget these are superficial differences,” says Sotomayor, while reading from her new book, "My Beloved World." Speaking at the Heritage Lecture Series at Hostos Community College, she recalled stories from her Bronx neighborhood and her family. More »
