Although NYC may be teeming with outdoor events in the summertime, it is important to remember that while enjoying those events, high temperatures combined with high humidity could lead to deadly heat indices. Heat waves are particularly dangerous for children, seniors, people with cardiovascular disease, and people taking psychotropic and other medications. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind to beat the heat: if you have an air conditioner, use it, setting the thermostat no lower than 78 degrees; if you do not have an air conditioner, consider visiting a public pool, air-conditioned store or theater, or a cooling center; avoid strenuous activity especially during the sun’s peak hours of 11:00 am to 4:00 pm; and most importantly, stay out of the sun, if possible.
