A fond recollection of V.C. Ernesto Malave was when he gave us, student government leaders from Kingsborough Community College, copies of the new budget at the CUNY leadership conference in upstate New York. He would hand them out individually with a big smile, and let us know we were the first to get them. He made us feel special, and he left a big impression on everyone, especially on me, a Puerto Rican student, also formerly from The Bronx, that saw him as a role model who achieved a high level of education and prestige in CUNY. It gives me hope that I, and others, can reach any level of success if we put our minds to it. We CAN persevere. How very sad that he is gone. A light has been extinguished, but his flame and legacy will always shine on.
