Statement by Interim Chancellor Christoph M. Kimmich

January 29, 1998 | The University

We are eager to work with Mayor Giuliani to strengthen the educational preparation of incoming freshmen before they are admitted to CUNY community colleges. CUNY does not offer “10th and 11th Grade Skills Tests” but does test entering freshmen in reading, writing and mathematics at the 13th grade level to examine readiness for college level work. This is all the more important since 55% of community college entering freshmen are not recent high school graduates, over 56% do not speak English as their first language, and many require additional language skills to succeed in college.

Two committees of the Board of Trustees–one on Collaboration with the Public Schools and one on Remediation– are working to build further on the Board’s longstanding efforts in this area. We strongly support high standards while maintaining CUNY’s historic commitment to access to educational opportunity.
