CUNY Chancellor Seeks State Legislative Support For Full-time Faculty In Testimony Before Joint Committee Hearing

February 3, 2000 | The University

City University of New York Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, in testimony February 2 before a joint hearing of the New York State Assembly Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee, called on the legislators to support the University’s budget priorities. They include funding for:

  • more full-time faculty
  • creating a “flagship environment” of high quality programs at campuses across the University
  • improving teacher education
  • increasing community college Base Aid
  • expanding the College Now program
  • supporting partnerships with emerging biotechnology and new media companies
  • continued upgrading of campus facilities

Noting that CUNY has suffered a 20% decrease in full-time faculty since 1980, Chancellor Goldstein called for increased support for academic quality.
