Professor Billy Collins of Lehman College, the Poet Laureate of the United States, will read a selection of his poetry at City University of New York Board of Trustees meeting on Monday June 25, 2001.
A longtime member of Lehman College’s English Department, Professor Collins was appointed by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington on June 21, 2001 to serve as Poet Laureate of the United States.
Professor Collins and eight University faculty members will be honored by the Trustees as University Distinguished Professors, CUNY’s highest ranking. The meeting will be carried live by CUNY-TV Channel 75.
Professor Collins is among the most widely read poets today. Collins’s poetry has appeared in anthologies, textbooks, and a variety of periodicals, including Poetry, American Poetry Review, American Scholar, Harper’s, Paris Review, and The New Yorker. His work has been featured in the Pushcart Prize anthology and The Best American Poetry for 1992, 1993, and 1997. He has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 1992, he was chosen by the New York Public Library to serve as “Literary Lion.”
