Bronx, NY: In preparation for what promises to be an exciting re-match, members of the NYC Council and NYS Assembly have practiced their moves and fakes and are limbered up for The Second Classic NYC Council vs. NYS Assembly Basketball Classic Game, which will be held in the Hostos Community College gymnasium at 12 noon on Saturday, December 3, 2005.
When reminded of his team’s loss in 2004, City Council Majority Leader and captain Joel Rivera declared, “We are a lot better prepared this year, and we plan to take the game to them.” “Not so fast ,” retorted Assemblyman Luis Diaz, captain of the Assembly’s team, “if memory serves me well, we still have the height advantage and especially the speed” – a reference to Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick’s agility under the boards and Assemblyman Rubin Diaz’s speed. Both legislative bodies have agreed to use their annual basketball game to call attention to the importance of physical fitness and the health concerns that many of their constituents face in the city and state.
The lineup for the NYS Assembly’s team this year will include: Keith Wright, Jeff Aubry, Michael Cusick, Steven Englebright, Adriano Espaillat, Michael Gianaris, Carl Heastie, Jose Peralta, Darrl Towns, Camara Kareen, and Naomi Rivera. At press time, the New York City Council players are Gifford Miller, Lewis A. Fidler, Dennis Gallagher, Robert jackson, Miram Monserrate, Peter Vallone Jr., and Maria Baez.
The event is free to the public, but seating is limited. To make reservations, please call (718) 518-4300.
