Students who need a little extra help to prepare their term papers as the semester draws to an end are encouraged to register for one-on-one research consultation sessions at the Newman Library. Appointments are available until Thursday, April 26 on the following days:
April 18 (Wednesday) between 3-5 pm
April 19 (Thursday) between 1-3 pm
April 24 (Tuesday) between 1-3 pm
April 25 (Wednesday) 3-5 pm
April 26 (Thursday) between 1-3 pm
Students will get “complete, undivided attention” during their half-hour consultation, says Stephen Francoeur, an information services librarian. “(The sessions offer) the same thing we do at the reference desk, but it will be highly personalized, with a generous amount of time and in the quiet confines of a librarian’s office.”
Though the program is aimed primarily at students taking English courses, students in any course may sign up for one of the sessions by filling out a research consultation form on the Newman Library’s website. Students are strongly encouraged to sign up in advance using the form on the library’s website in order to attend a session. Go to http://newman.baruch.cuny.edu/services/consultations/index.php to schedule an appointment.
The library has offered the consultations for the past four-and-a-half years, and the sessions have been very successful. Over the past few years, all surveyed participants have agreed that the sessions were helpful, with 65% expressing strong approval.
The program’s goal is to help students with all aspects of term paper research, including finding and evaluating sources, narrowing down topics, and the proper citation of references. Librarians will not read students’ papers, however, and the sessions are not a substitute for or duplicate of the services of the Writing Center. “We will be helping students translate their research topics into very concrete search strategies and recommendations to find and use articles, books, and statistics,” says Francoeur.
