Spring Opera Scenes At Queens College May 13 Features A Variety Of Staged Opera Excerpts — Selections Range From Romantic Farce And Mythical Fantasy To The Fate Of Star-Crossed Lovers —

FLUSHING, NY, May 7, 2007 — The Opera Studio is comprised of candidates for the bachelor of music and master of music in voice in Queens College’s nationally acclaimed Aaron Copland School of Music. Scenes will be fully staged with costumes, lighting and piano accompaniment. In choosing the program, Opera Studio musical director Bruce Norris and stage director David Ronis matched repertoire choices with students’ talents and educational needs.

The Mozart excerpts range from the comic first act trio “Cosa sento? Tosto andate,” and the sublime duet “Sull’aria,” from The Marriage of Figaro, to The Magic Flute’s tender duet “Bei Mannern.” A scene from the first act of Don Giovanni includes the famous duet “La ci darem la mano.” Other highlights are the virtuosic duet “Serbami ognor” from Rossini’s Semiramide, based on Voltaire’s tragedy Semiramis, and the hilarious first act finale of the composer’s L’italiana in Algeri. A trio from Weber’s rarely heard Der Freischutz, often called a prototype for later 19th-century German opera, and the dramatic letter scene from Massenet’s tragic romance Werther will also be performed.

Bruce Norris has had a diversified career as accompanist, voice teacher, vocal coach and assistant conductor. For more than 20 years he has maintained a private voice studio in New York City. His students currently perform leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, and major opera houses throughout the world. David Ronis directs and performs opera and theatre and is in demand as a clinician, teaching “Acting for Singers” master classes all over the country. He has sung over 50 operatic roles with more than 30 companies in Europe and Asia and throughout the U.S. In concert he has appeared as a soloist at Carnegie, Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Halls.
