The Lehman College Community Band will celebrate the holiday season with “Holiday Spectacular,” a free concert featuring a mix of holiday music and wind gems for band. This event, which is open to the public, will take place on Sunday, December 16, at 2 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre.
Led by Professor Alan Hollander of the Music Department, the band will perform music by Menotti, Charles Ives, Hosay, Alexander and others. Junior Yumi Suehiro will join the band for a special solo performance of Marimba Concerto for marimba and wind ensemble. Originally from Osaka, Japan, Suehiro has played piano and marimba since age seven. At age 12, she won the Kobe International Music Competition’s Performance Award. At Lehman, she studies with Professor Morris Lang and has been named to this year’s Deanâ€™s List. She also plays in the Lehman College Jazz Band and the Lehman College Band.
A professional musician and conductor, Professor Hollander has served as principal oboist and has performed as a soloist with numerous ensembles throughout the New York metropolitan area. He has conducted the American Wind Ensemble, the Larchmont Symphony, the Westchester Pops and other ensembles throughout the region.
In addition, he is active as a clinician and conductor in public school music programs throughout New York State, leading All County and All State Festival Ensembles. For 26 years, he has served as director of Music and Instrumental Ensembles in the Edgemont Public Schools. He is also the musical director of the Westchester Band.
A senior college of the City University of New York, Lehman is located at Goulden Avenue and Bedford Park Boulevard in the northwest Bronx and is accessible by bus as well as the #4 and “D” subway lines. Free attended parking is also available.
