York College/The City University of New York (www.york.cuny.edu) will hold a series of free financial planning workshops at an economic forum, “A New Plan for a New Year: How to Manage in Challenging Times,” Saturday, January 24, 2009, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd., in Room 2D01, Jamaica, New York. There will also be free tax workshops from 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Co-sponsors of the event are the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Amalgamated Bank, Citibank, Prudential and The Burgess Group.
The workshops, open to the public, are intended to provide information to assist constituents in financial decision making. Workshops will include how to’s on tax preparation, mortgage programs, financial planning, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) and employment.
Last year, with the support of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), York College offered free tax assistance to area residents. Our cadre of volunteer students, majoring in Accounting, completed returns for more than 500 senior citizens and other low-income individuals. These students generated well over $500,000 in refunds. This year’s economic forum is a continuation of that public service.
