mtvU Channel Interviews CSI Student/Veteran

U.S. Army veteran and reservist Daniel Castillo went in front of cameras for the mtvU channel yesterday for an interview that will be played on the station in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Castillo, who served in Iraq in the infantry division and is still a member of the Reserves as a drill sergeant, is currently a police officer with the NYPD. He is also a Political Science major at CSI.

During the interview, Castillo discussed his military service and what it’s like to be both a member of the NYPD and a CSI student. Regarding the services that CSI offers U.S. military veterans who return to College, as Castillo has done under the G.I. Bill, he says that he was impressed with Assistant Registrar Vito Zajda, who is also the Veterans Advisor Certifying Officer and a Transfer Evaluation Specialist at the CSI Veteran Center.

Castillo noted that Zajda, “treats all of the vets with respect and helps us with everything. So, far, I’ve had a hassle-free [admission] to CSI. He sat me down, got my information, and took care of everything from there.”

CSI was named a Top Military Friendly school by G.I. Jobs magazine earlier this month.

The CSI Student Veteran Center offers services that include confidential personal and academic assistance provided by a professional counselor, sensitive to veterans’ issues. The Center also works closely with many other campus departments providing readjustment counseling, academic advisement, and educational and financial aid benefits, along with information and referrals to disability and mental health services, academic support, health and wellness services, academic and vocational counseling, and various community resources.
