QC Knights To Play Molloy College Lions   —

FLUSHING, NY, January 8, 2010 – On January 16 at 6 pm, the CBS College Sports Network will broadcast a women’s basketball game between the Queens College Knights and the Molloy College Lions live from Queens College’s FitzGerald Gymnasium. This is the first nationally televised game for the QC team and one of eight Division II basketball games (four women’s and four men’s) that the network will air live this year. CBS College Sports is a 24-hour national cable network.

This event, which is free and open to the public, is being billed as the “East Coast Conference (ECC) Women’s Basketball Showdown.” QC is the defending ECC champion, while Molloy captured the title in 2008.

Queens College currently has 20 Division II sports teams. The QC women’s basketball team, which was formed in the 1950s, has an illustrious history of setting new records, breaking new ground, and capturing media attention for women’s athletics nationwide. From 1968-81, the team enjoyed a period of unprecedented success, unparalleled to this day, with one member, Gail Marquis, going on to win a silver medal with the U.S. Olympic Team in 1976. Many of the athletes joined European leagues, and others went on to play for the Women’s Professional Basketball League (WBL), the forerunner of today’s WNBA. In 2004, the 1972-73 QC team became the first women’s squad to be inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.

The college is located at 65-30 Kissena Blvd., Flushing, NY 11360.  For travel directions, go to: http://www.qc.cuny.edu/welcome/directions/Pages/default.aspx.
