The Second Annual Technology in the Classroom Faculty Showcase spotlighted the technology blooming in BCC classrooms. Explanations by faculty showed how technology is being integrated across the campus in the History, Communication Arts and Sciences, Education and Reading, Tutoring, and Biology departments with particular course objectives.
Bronx Community College’s Office of Instructional Technology (OIT) hosted the event, providing an opportunity for curious faculty to listen and watch how colleagues are making technology work for them.
George Sanchez, senior vice president for Academic Affairs, welcomed faculty and opened the event saying, “Technology is a program of high expectations on this campus. We want to help improve pedagogy by helping develop a digital DNA in students so that we can converge a more effective connection for learning and teaching. With your help in these showcase presentations today; we are launched on an emerging technology trajectory.”
“A lot of professors are doing so many great things to expand teaching styles across campus,” states Albert Robinson, instructional technology coordinator. “These tech events give faculty the opportunity to showcase how they are integrating digital technologies into their courses.
“Right now, across campus, while students are engaged in online learning, they are also learning how to build E-portfolios. These are websites into which students embed their resume, academic work, writing samples, job experience, favorite activities, goals and extra-curricular interests. With an E-portfolio, a student can seek a transfer, or seek a job by opening a web link that unlocks their electronic portfolio to a recruitment officer or potential employer in Boston, San Francisco, or wherever.”
Robinson, along with Professor Howard Wach, director of the Office of Instructional Technology, hosted the event this year as well as last year’s first annual event.
According to Wach, “The applications on display today give faculty a wonderful sense of possibilities for improving the way students learn and communicate with each other as well as with faculty. Professors can learn about these online technologies by listening and seeing their colleagues demonstrate them at these faculty showcase events. They see faculty who are persistent and innovative in their efforts to adapt technology in their classrooms.”
New teaching and learning software applications are offered in OIT courses that are announced in campus-wide broadcasts throughout the year.
Here’s a sampling of some of the presenters:
- Dr. Kate Culkin (History) explained how she uses creative video podcasts to stimulate student classroom discussions. She even has students creating podcasts, which use audio, video and text to help make history come alive beyond textbooks.
- Professor Moronke Oshin-Martin (Communication Arts and Sciences) demonstrated how she uses the VoiceThread 2.0 platform to: (1) encourage students to explore topics they can only touch on in class discussions; (2) encourage student participation and engagement with others in a non-threatening environment and (3) prepare and train students for public speaking.
- Dr. Joan Wilson and Ryan Jorawar (Education and Reading) showed some applications of Blackboard during their session entitled “Options for Learning Styles & Study Skills: Discussions, Blogs and Organization in Web-Enhanced and Hybrid Courses.” Wilson showed how she has employed Blackboard to help students better connect to concepts.
- Dr. J. Juechter and Jonathan Padilla (Perkins Tutoring Center/Institutional Advancement) talked about advantages of new tutoring models of service delivery: online tutoring, assignments with online courses, virtual tutoring centers, and social networking. Juechter also described how faculty have greater partnership expectations of tutors as the College expands its enrollment, increases the use of classroom and administrative technology and encourages hybrid courses.
- Professor Carlos Liachovitzky demonstrated how he uses YouTube and Google sites to create dynamic, web-based resources for Anatomy and Physiology students.
- Dr. Jordi Getman (History) demonstrated how his students have used
E-portfolios to organize and reflect on their learning in his course.

The College is home to initiatives not commonly associated with two-year institutions, such as the Center for Sustainable Energy, which promotes the use of renewable and efficient energy technologies in urban communities. The National Center for Educational Alliances (NCEA) ) is currently collaborating with South African Further Education and Training Colleges and universities to create linkages between these institutions and is also working to enhance student and academic support at the colleges.. NCEA also coordinates the College’s global initiative which facilitates global learning within and outside of the classroom.
