For many community college students, the obstacles to completion, graduation and academic success lie not in the difficulty of their studies but in the struggles and financial demands of their day-to-day lives. Single Stop USA has formed a system-wide partnership with all six CUNY community colleges to provide students with the full range of financial supports to help students remain enrolled and engaged in their studies. Queensborough Community College offers students and their families access to life-changing support right on campus.
In just a few minutes, counselors can help a student determine their family’s eligibility for such necessities as childcare, Medicaid, food stamps, housing assistance and much more.
“Most of our students are under enormous pressure to hold down a job, care for their families, and do well in school,” said Colin Harrison, Project Administrator for Single Stop USA at Queensborough, which also provided free tax assistance to over 200 Queensborough students earlier this year. “Our mission is to offer them proactive, comprehensive support on issues that could otherwise derail their academic success.”
Among the special workshops to be offered this summer include “Free Credit Report Day” and “Meet the (Legal and Financial) Experts Day.” To learn more please call 718-631-6347 or visit: http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/singlestop/
Queensborough is celebrating its 50th Anniversary throughout the 2009-10 academic year, with a series of special events, programs, openings, exhibits and performances. The College, located on a picturesque 37-acre site in Bayside, Queens, offers a rich liberal arts and science curriculum, as well as career and pre-professional courses. Over half of the faculty holds doctorates compared with 21% of faculty in other community colleges nationwide. Comprising one of the most diverse populations of any college in the U.S., more than 15,000 students pursue an Associate degree or Certificate program and another 10,000 students of all ages attend continuing education programs. Among the campus’s prized resources are the Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center, the QCC Art Gallery, and the Queensborough Performing Arts Center (QPAC), created to stimulate ideas and intellectual curiosity while exposing students and the public to culture and the arts.
