Statement by Chancellor Matthew Goldstein on the New York State Executive Budget for 2011-12

February 1, 2011 | The University

We are reviewing the New York State Executive Budget released today by Governor Cuomo and will be analyzing its impact on the colleges of The City University of New York.   This includes operational and capital funding as well as state support for student financial aid. The University recognizes that State officials are diligently endeavoring to meet the fiscal challenges associated with the current budget deficit.   At the same time, record-breaking numbers of students are seeking higher education opportunity at CUNY so that they may compete effectively for careers in an unforgiving economy and increasingly international marketplace.  This is the beginning of an important process of discussion with the Executive and the New York State Legislature, including hearings and dialogue in the weeks ahead prior to the scheduled April 1 adoption of the State Budget.  We remain committed to working with all parties in order to both mitigate the negative impact of proposed reductions and to maintain high quality and accessibility to educational opportunities that CUNY represents to hundreds of thousands of New York families.
