BRONX, N.Y.—The First Lady of The Dominican Republic, Dr. Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, will deliver the 42nd annual Lehman Lecture at Lehman College on Wednesday, March 23, at 11 a.m. in the Lovinger Theatre. She will be presented with an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the College. Both the ceremony and lecture will be presented in English and will be webcast live at www.lehman.edu.
Dr. Cedeño de Fernández became First Lady in 2004 and has concentrated her efforts on working with some of the most vulnerable sectors of her country’s population, aiming to reduce poverty, improve education and close the digital gap. Many of these initiatives have won national and international praise, and she has won numerous awards for her work.
In 2007, the Pan-American Health Organization appointed her Continental Ambassador for the Elimination of Rubella on the American Continent. That same year, she received the World Information Society Award from the International Telecommunications Union for ensuring that telecom technologies are available to the poor of her country. She also has been named “Woman of the Year” by the Latin Pride National Awards, reserved for significant figures in Latin America, and recently received the Gold Medal of the Government of Italy.
Dr. Cedeño de Fernández received her Doctorate of Law from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo and her master’s degree in corporate law and economic legislation from the Pontifical Catholic University. She also has studied at Georgetown and Harvard universities, and the University of Geneva in Switzerland. As a lawyer, she has worked professionally with a number of prestigious law firms in the Dominican Republic and is a partner and founding member of Abel Rodríguez del Orbe and Fernández y Asociados.
Previous Lehman Lecturers have included an array of notable figures from a wide range of fields, including John V. Lindsey, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Joseph Papp, Albert Shanker, Barbara Ward, Raul Yzaguirre and Michael Beschloss.
