Students, alumni, faculty and guests will gather in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center North for the College’s forty-sixth commencement exercises on Friday, June 3, 2011, at 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM. College President Jeremy Travis, will open both commencement ceremonies. The day is the high point for undergraduate and graduate students who have worked diligently in pursuit of academic excellence.

A group of students from Curtis High School recently had a unique opportunity to perform some hands-on estuarine water quality research, thanks to a $25,000 grant from Con Edison that the College of Staten Island (CSI) received last February. The program, which concluded earlier this month, provided a day’s-worth of science instruction for a total of 100 underserved high school students from Curtis High School and IS 49 who came to the College in smaller groups.
Lorraine Singletary, this year’s Valedictorian, will address the BMCC graduating class of 2011 at the June 6th commencement.
“I went from high school dropout to college Valedictorian. It’s amazing. I still can’t believe it,” says Singletary, a Media Arts and Technology major who grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

CCNY Prof Tony Ro reports new insights on synesthesia at Acoustical Society of America Conference. To determine how sensory mixing occurs, Professor Ro and colleagues traced the neural pathways of sound and touch in the brain. The experimenters played varied sounds through headphones to subjects who were either seated in sound-muffling testing chambers or lying in a magnetic imaging scanner.
