Students in Bronx Community College’s Continuing and Professional Studies HITECH Program attended the Second Annual New York State Student Informatics Conference on September 23, 2011. Held at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, the conference was presented by the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS). The purpose of the event was to nurture and develop future health information technology (HIT) professionals. Conference speakers included doctors, nurses, and former HIT students. During a panel discussion, current students learned about how to get a position in the growing career field of health information technology. Also during the conference, Dr. Salvatore Volpe, former chairman of HIMSS, spoke about the challenges of implementing electronic health records in primary health practices, and the demands for a highly trained HIT workforce.
