Statement by Chancellor Matthew Goldstein

February 22, 2012 | The University

I am concerned about recent press reports alleging invasive surveillance involving students of the Islamic faith at several colleges, including some within The City University of New York system. Neither the University nor its colleges were informed by law enforcement entities of surveillance activities. In addition, the University has no information as to the basis for such activities.

The City University of New York must be vigilant about maintaining a learning environment that protects diverse opinions, encourages academic inquiry, and respects religious freedom, for our students, our faculty, and all members of our community. Particularly during these challenging times, it is imperative that we sustain these core values through an open exchange with students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as city, state, and federal agencies and community and religious groups, in order to safeguard the rights and ensure the safety of CUNY’s entire community.
