The judges of the Livingston Awards have chosen Dean Stephen B. Shepard as the recipient of the 2012 Richard M. Clurman Award for his dedication to mentoring young journalists during his journalism career of nearly 50 years.
Shepard is being honored for his work with young reporters and editors while he served as editor-in-chief of BusinessWeek from 1984-2005 and senior editor of national affairs for Newsweek from 1975-80.
Among the journalists he mentored at BusinessWeek were Professor Sarah Bartlett, who heads the Urban Reporting Program at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, and Karen Pennar, who established a business reporting award for CUNY J-School alumni in memory of her late husband, Frederick Wiegold, a former editor at Bloomberg News and The Wall Street Journal.
Media writer Ken Auletta will present the Clurman award to Shepard at a luncheon on June 6.
The Livingston Awards give recognition to media professionals under the age of 35.
