The City College of New York has appointed Praveen Panchal vice president for information technology and chief information officer, CCNY President Lisa S. Coico announced. Mr. Panchal, who is an alumnus of City College and has been chief information officer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice since 2006, will assume his new duties July 2.
“We are extremely fortunate to be able to bring in a CIO who has such extensive leadership experience in developing innovative, customer-focused technology solutions to large, complex institutional challenges – and whose thorough understanding of CUNY will lead to College-University partnerships that can leverage our strengths,” President Coico said in announcing the appointment.
As John Jay’s chief information officer, Mr. Panchal developed a technological roadmap aligned with that institution’s visions and strategic priorities to support excellence in learning, teaching, research and administration. He collaborated with leaders across the campus and beyond to ensure that these priorities were adequately supported and achieved through the use of existing and emerging technologies.
Mr. Panchal was responsible for planning, designing and managing the construction of a new data center, network infrastructure, smart classrooms and peripheral technology for John Jay’s new academic center, as well as coordinating the move into the facility. He also served as campus lead for implementation of the CUNYfirst enterprise resource planning solution.
Mr. Panchal joined John Jay from Hostos Community College, where he served as executive director/director of information technology from 1999 to 2003 and assistant vice president of information technology from 2003 to 2006. Earlier in his career, he held positions with the New York City School Construction Authority (1990 – 1999) and New York City Department of Education (1988 – 1990)
A resident of New Hyde Park, N.Y., Mr. Panchal holds an MS in computer science from The City College of New York and an MBA in finance and investments from Baruch College. In addition, he has a BS in electrical engineering from University of Calicut in India.
