Big Changes at The Local

Mitchell Trinka, The Local's new collaborative editor

They say the only constant in New York life is change. The Local, the hyperlocal news site in Brooklyn run by the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in collaboration with The New York Times, is not immune.

Starting Monday, July 16, J-School alum Mitchell Trinka will take over as collaborative editor of The Local, succeeding Gersh Kuntzman, who held the job for seven months. Kuntzman is ending his stint of running the site day-to-day to become deputy managing editor for news at The New York Daily News. He was previously a reporter and columnist for The New York Post, and editor of The Brooklyn Paper.

Trinka, who worked on the site as a student, an intern, and the first Local Fellow, is well known to many Fort Greene and Clinton Hill residents. He can be reached at Kyle Thomas McGovern, the current Local Fellow and staff reporter, can be reached at

More changes are likely coming to The Local as a result of The Times’ recent decision to end its affiliation with the site in the next six months to a year. The J-School is examining a variety of options for The Local going forward.
