BRONX, N.Y.—Lehman College will host a keynote address by Andrew Serwer, managing editor of Fortune Magazine, during the opening plenary session of the National Numeracy Network conference on Friday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 330 of the Music Building. The public is invited as well to conference sessions on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the CUNY Macaulay Honors College in the Lincoln Center area. Registration for the entire conference, with a fee of $60, is also available online.
Built around this year’s theme, “Quantitative Literacy at Work: Navigating the World of Journalism, Finance, Business and Citizenship,” the discussions will focus on numeracy, including quantitative literacy and journalism and faculty training for quantitative literacy.
Quantitative reasoning is the practice of applying practical mathematical solutions to everyday problems. Quantitative literacy serves everyone from reporters to teachers, researchers and social workers, to the average citizen reading a news report. Individuals with quantitative reasoning skills are able to interpret, analyze and discuss complex graphs and data sets—a skill that is critical to being an active participant in the workplace and in communities.
As managing editor of Fortune, Serwer is responsible for overseeing the magazine and fortune.com, which draw a combined audience of more than eleven million readers, including those who follow Fortune’s digital media and attend Fortune conferences. He was named managing editor of the magazine in October 2006 and won the Society of American Business Editors and Writers 2010 Award for Best in Business General Excellence. That year, the magazine also received a Loeb Award and a New York Press Club award for its 2009 reporting on Bernie Madoff.
