Professor Polly Thistlethwaite’s appointment as Chief Librarian of the Mina Rees Library at the Graduate Center, effective July 1, 2012, was approved by the CUNY Board of Trustees at its September 24 meeting. She has served as Acting Chief Librarian since August 2011.
Thistlethwaite joined the Graduate Center’s library faculty in 2002 as the Associate Librarian for Public Services. Before that, she served in libraries at Colorado State University, Hunter College, New York University, and Yale University; she has also held positions with the CUNY Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies, the Lesbian Herstory Archives, the Alternative Press index, and several local and national library organizations.
During this past year, Thistlethwaite has embarked on numerous initiatives, most notably extending partnerships with external libraries through the Manhattan Research Library Initiative (MaRLI). The MaRLI has made it possible for the GC to share resources with the New York Public Library (NYPL), New York University, and Columbia University. Thistlethwaite has worked closely with the administration of the NYPL to routinize access and borrowing privileges for the Graduate Center’s students and faculty, as well as to improve delivery and return between the two institutions. Currently, she is engaged with several open access scholarly publishing initiatives.
Thistlethwaite’s scholarship includes examination of archival practices in the United States and Germany. She holds an M.S. in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois and an M.A. in Liberal Studies from the Graduate Center.
