NEW YORK, NY – January 8, 2013 – The Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship at Baruch College is offering a 10-day program for students from Chile looking to launch their own businesses and learn about the U.S. financial markets. The initiative, called the New York Entrepreneur Project, is held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., January 7-19.
Undergraduate students from the Universidad Technologica de Chile in Santiago will learn entrepreneurial concepts, create their own business plans and make prototypes of new product ideas. “The program is designed as a ‘crash course’ in financial literacy and entrepreneurship,” explains Monica Dean, director of the Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship. “Faculty from Baruch’s Zicklin School of Business as well as current MBA students will be assigned to assist the students as they work in teams and learn how to launch a business.”
Lessons will be incorporated from the CUNY Institute for Virtual Enterprise, an entrepreneurial education program that provides students with the necessary tools to learn how to become entrepreneurs from idea creation to launch. Students develop and manage global entrepreneurial virtual enterprises (VEs) in an online business environment, where they can trade their goods and services in a closed global economy with participating firms and students from all over the world. The site, www.ivefinancial.com, uses a special online tool, MarketMaker, which is comprised of a virtual bank, credit card, e-commerce system and a stock market.
The program will also include trips where students can meet with local entrepreneurs and visit the Museum of American Finance on Wall Street. Guest speakers, including successful Baruch alumni who have launched their own products, will also be invited to the classroom to share their experiences. At the end of the 10 days, students will create an elevator pitch and formal presentation of their new product idea.
“The New York Entrepreneur Project is designed to be instructional and interactive, and to provide the student and faculty participants an active learning experience that they can continue upon return to their respective universities,” says Dean.
The Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship is a model of entrepreneurship education built around the collaboration of an institution of higher education, government, and the private sector.
