Queensborough Community College Selected as 2013 Bellwether Award Finalist

Queensborough Community College’s acclaimed Freshman Academies has been selected as one of ten Bellwether finalists in program’s Instructional Programs and Services category.

The annual Bellwether awards recognize outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are successfully leading community colleges into the future. The awards are sponsored by the Community College Futures Assembly.

Queensborough is among 30 finalists in three categories, selected from of nearly 250 community college applications nationwide. The other two categories are Planning, Governance and Finance and Workforce Development.

“The Freshman Academies initiative represents an intentional effort to support student success through enhanced advisement and guidance through the Freshman Coordinators, as well as the provision of High Impact Practices which have been observed nationally to engage students, and to assist students in making deeper connections to their learning,” said Michele Cuomo, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Queensborough Community College. “The protocol enables Queensborough to better understand what is most effective, and to continue to develop opportunities within the initiative.”
“This is well-deserved recognition for the College as well as for Michele, who has anchored the project and brought us to where we are today with the Academies,” said Dr. Diane B. Call, Interim President.

In the fall of 2009, Queensborough launched the Freshman Academies for every first-time, full-time student, providing a student-centered learning environment with the College’s exceptional faculty. While other educational institutions have similar programs, Queensborough is the only community college to offer the initiative for all major areas of study.

Ms. Cuomo is scheduled to present the program, The Freshman Academy Assessment Protocol, at the Community College Futures Assembly in Orlando, FL, in January 2013. One winner will be selected from each category by a panel of national experts in the respective areas.
