Former staffers of Newsweek magazine have so far pledged $35,000 to establish an award for CUNY Graduate School of Journalism alumni who “best exemplify the values, excellence, and spirit of Newsweek magazine during its heyday.”
Dean Stephen B. Shepard, a former national editor of Newsweek, announced the Newsweek Magazine Alumni Prize at a Jan. 14 party at the CUNY J-School attended by more than 300 Newsweek journalists, past and present. The first award will be presented at the J-School’s annual fundraising gala on May 13.
The weekly news magazine, which began publishing in 1933, put out its last print issue at the end of 2012. The final cover features a vintage picture of the old Newsweek building in New York, accompanied by the headline “#LASTPRINTISSUE.”
Newsweek will continue in digital form only.
