NEW YORK, NY-February 11, 2013 – Baruch’s MFE Program won second place in the International Association of Financial Engineers (IAFE) Academic Case Competition, which concluded in December 2012. The announcement was made during the IAFE’s annual gala on February 7, in the Museum of Mathematics.
Baruch College was one of 31 teams, representing 17 financial engineering programs from across the United States that entered the five-week competition. During the competition, Baruch’s team conducted a case study that focused on a capital adequacy problem – how to allocate funds to maximize returns while complying with the regulatory requirement of Basel III, and suggested regulatory improvements for Basel III.
The Baruch MFE program team included: Yi Kelvin Zhang (the team captain), Srinivas Kanepalli, Jin Kong, Ran Sally, Liu Yujia, Helen Sun Shixiang, and Sean Zhang.
Baruch College won second place, behind the UC Berkeley team. Dan Stefanica, MFE Program Director, applauds the students’ dedication and eagerness to learn.
“Our paper generated remarkable feedback, with the judges seeking us out to congratulate the students on their novel approach,” Stefanica said. “Having our students at the very top of academic competitions in both trading competition (winning the Rotman International Trading Competition in 2012) and case competitions is remarkable and unique. It is a testimony to the strength of our students and to the level of education they are receiving in our program, thus making their success the success of our entire community. The breadth of their knowledge and interests are one of the keys to their remarkable success on the job market, which improved through very challenging times.”
