BRONX, N.Y.—Lehman College will serve as one of several venues throughout the New York Metropolitan area showcasing films from the 5th Annual ReelAbilities: NY Disabilities Film Festival. The screenings will take place March 11-12 in the Music Building’s Faculty Dining Room. This event is free, but space is limited.
The Festival, which will feature over 20 New York premiers of internationally acclaimed films, includes narrative, documentary and short films from across the globe. Each screening will be followed by conversations and in-depth discussions with filmmakers and special guests. Lehman will present three full length films and a collection of film shorts, starting on Mon., March 11, at 5 p.m. with director Jacques Spitzer’s Wampler’s Ascent, followed by Geoffrey Enthoven’s Come As You Are at 7 p.m.
In Wampler’s Ascent, Spitzer follows Steve Wampler, who has cerebral palsy, on his journey to climb the famous El Capitan Mountain in Yosemite. The Wampler family will be at the screening and will participate in a question and answer session. Come As You Are, about three young men with disabilities who embark on a quest to lose their virginity, is the winner of the European Film Awards’ People’s Choice Award.
The Festival will continue on Tues., March 12, at 5 p.m. with Reel Encounters 2013, a collection of short international films, followed by Six Points About Emma at 7 p.m. The film focuses on Emma, a blind woman who is determined to have a baby with one of two men she is trying to woo. The film’s director, Roberto Perez Toledo, will travel from his native Spain to attend the presentation.
“Lehman is delighted to host this event which celebrates the lives, stories and expressions of people with different abilities,” says Merrill D. Parra, director of Student Disability Services. “These cutting edge films from across the spectrum of disabilities, addresses previously taboo topics and challenges the way people with disabilities, America’s largest minority, are perceived. We hope that attendees will come away with a greater understanding that attitudes are the real disability.”
